PCD (Polycrystalline Diamond) is a synthetic diamond product that is produced by sintering together selected diamond particles with a metal matrix, using sophisticated technology. The diamond and matrix, when sintered together under high temperatures and pressures, creates a PCD tool blank that is high in uniform hardness and is abrasive resistant in all directions. PCD Inserts is made of PCD tips( cutting from PCD blank) and a carbide substrate.

① Natural diamond tool: Natural diamond as a cutting tool has a history of hundreds of years, natural single crystal diamond tool after fine grinding, cutting edge can be ground extremely sharp, cutting radius up to 0.002μm, can achieve ultra-thin cutting, can process high workpiece accuracy and very low surface roughness, is recognized, ideal and can not be replaced by ultra-precision machining tool.
② PCD diamond tool: Natural diamond is expensive, diamond is widely used in cutting or polycrystalline diamond (PCD), since the early 1970s, the use of high temperature and high pressure synthesis technology to prepare polycrystalline diamond (PCD blade, referred to as the successful development of polycrystalline diamond, In many cases, natural diamond tools have been replaced by synthetic polycrystalline diamond. PCD raw material source is rich, its price is only tens of one to one tenth of natural diamond. PCD tool can not grind out extremely sharp edge, processing workpiece surface quality is not as good as natural for non-ferrous metal and non-metallic fine cutting, it is difficult to achieve ultra-precision mirror cutting.
③ CVD diamond tools: Since the late 1970s to the early 1980s, CVD diamond technology appeared in Japan. CVD diamond refers to the synthesis of diamond film on heterogeneous matrix (such as hard alloy, ceramics, etc.) by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). CVD diamond has exactly the same structure and characteristics as natural diamond. The performance of CVD diamond is very close to that of natural diamond. It has the advantages of natural single crystal diamond and polycrystalline diamond (PCD), and overcomes their shortcomings to a certain extent.

1. Application range of diamond tools
(1) Processing of non-ferrous materials that are difficult to process
Processing copper, zinc, aluminum and other non-ferrous metals and their alloys, the material is easy to adhere to the tool, processing difficulties. Using the characteristics of low friction coefficient of diamond and low affinity with non-ferrous metals, diamond cutting tools can effectively prevent the bonding between metal and cutting tools. In addition, due to the large elastic modulus of diamond, the cutting edge deformation is small, the non-ferrous metal cutting extrusion deformation is small, the cutting process can be completed in small deformation, so as to improve the quality of the machining surface.
(2) Processing of non-metallic materials that are difficult to process
When processing difficult non-metallic materials containing a large number of high hardness particles, such as glass fiber reinforced plastics, silicon filled materials, hard carbon fiber/epoxy resin composite materials, the hard point of the material makes the tool wear seriously, hard alloy tool is difficult to process, and diamond tool has high hardness and good wear resistance, so the processing efficiency is high.
(3) ultra-precision machining
With the advent of modern integrated technology, machining is developing towards high precision, which puts forward a rather high requirement for tool performance. Because diamond friction coefficient is small, low thermal expansion coefficient, high thermal conductivity, can cut extremely thin chips, chips easy to flow out, small affinity with other substances, not easy to produce debris tumor, small heat, high thermal conductivity, can avoid the impact of heat on the blade and the workpiece, so the blade is not easy to passivation, cutting deformation is small, can obtain high quality surface.

Performance characteristics of diamond cutting tools
① High hardness and wear resistance: natural diamond is the hardest substance that has been found in nature. Diamond has very high wear resistance. When processing high hardness materials, the life of diamond tool is lO ~ 100 times, or even up to hundreds of times.
② Has a very low friction coefficient: the friction coefficient between diamond and some non-ferrous metals is lower than other tools, low friction coefficient, processing deformation is small, can reduce the cutting force.
③ Very sharp cutting edge: the cutting edge of diamond tool can be ground very sharp, natural single crystal diamond tool can be up to 0.002 ~ 0.008μm, can carry out ultra-thin cutting and ultra-precision machining.
④ It has high thermal conductivity: diamond has high thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity, cutting heat is easy to disperse, and the cutting temperature is low.
⑤ It has a low coefficient of thermal expansion: the coefficient of thermal expansion of diamond is several times smaller than that of hard alloy, and the change of tool size caused by cutting heat is very small, which is particularly important for precision and ultra-precision machining with high dimensional accuracy requirements.
