In diamond crystal, the four valence electrons of carbon atom form a bond according to the tetrahedral structure, and each carbon atom forms a covalent bond with four neighboring atoms, thus forming the diamond structure. The binding force and directionality of this structure are very strong, so that diamond has a very high hardness. Because the structure of polycrystalline diamond (PCD) is fine grained diamond sintered body with different orientations, the hardness and wear resistance of PCD are still lower than that of single crystal diamond although the bonding agent is added. However, because the PCD sintered body is isotropic, it is not easy to crack along a single cleavage plane.
