Natural diamond tools are mainly used for copper and copper alloys
and precious non-ferrous metals such as gold, silver, rhodium, and
ultra-precision mirror processing of special parts, such as camera
disks, optical plane mirrors, multifaceted mirrors and quadric
mirrors. But its crystalline anisotropy, the tool is expensive. It
is mainly used for turning and processing various non-ferrous
metals such as aluminum, copper, magnesium and its alloys, cemented
carbide and fiber plasticizing materials with strong wear
resistance, metal matrix composite materials, wood and other
non-metallic materials. The cutting speed, feed speed and depth of
cutting machining conditions depend on the workpiece material and
hardness. Because there are some residual bonded metals and
graphite among the diamond particles, the bonded metals are
distributed in the coalescence state or in the vein shape, which
will reduce the wear resistance and life of the tool. In addition,
there is a residual amount of solvent metal, which is in direct
contact with the diamond surface.
In ultra-precision machining, the two basic accuracy of a single
crystal diamond tool are the precision of the cutting edge profile
and the blunt circle radius of the cutting edge. The roundness of
the cutting edge of the arc tool used for processing aspherical
lenses is below 0.05μm, and the straightness of the cutting edge
used for processing polyhedral mirrors is 0.02μm. The blunt radius
of the cutting edge of the tool (ρ value) indicates the sharpness
of the cutting edge of the tool. In order to adapt to various
processing requirements, the radius of the cutting edge of the tool
ranges from 20nm to 1μm.
(1) Processing of non-ferrous metal materials that are difficult to
process
When processing copper, zinc, aluminum and other non-ferrous metals
and their alloys, the material is easy to adhere to the tool, and
the processing is difficult. By using the characteristics of low
friction coefficient of diamond and small affinity with non-ferrous
metals, diamond tools can effectively prevent the bonding between
metal and tools. In addition, due to the large elastic modulus of
diamond, the cutting edge deformation is small, and the extrusion
deformation of the non-ferrous metal is small, which can make the
cutting process complete under small deformation, so as to improve
the quality of the machined surface.
(2) Processing of non-metallic materials that are difficult to
process
Processing containing a large number of high-hardness particles
difficult to process non-metallic materials, such as glass fiber
reinforced plastics, silicon filled materials, hard carbon
fiber/epoxy resin composite materials, the hard point of the
material makes the tool wear seriously, hard to process with
carbide tools, and diamond tools have high hardness and good wear
resistance, so the processing efficiency is high.
(3) Ultra-precision machining
With the advent of modern integrated technology, machining is
developing in the direction of high precision, which puts forward
quite high requirements for tool performance. Due to the small
friction coefficient of diamond, low thermal expansion coefficient,
high thermal conductivity, can cut extremely thin chips, chips easy
to flow out, small affinity with other substances, not easy to
produce chip tumor, small heat, high thermal conductivity, can
avoid the impact of heat on the blade and the workpiece, so the
blade is not easy to passivation, cutting deformation is small, can
obtain a higher quality surface.
